06. November 2017 Postdoc Project Kick-off Event

IMAP celebrated the start of 18 new and independent postdoctoral research projects by greeting ten new and eight current IMAP members whose research will be funded by "The Future Ocean" starting November 1, 2017.

The IMAP community met in the Glashaus of the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design, Kiel, to learn about the new projects which were presented during the international Conference "Advances in Integrated Ocean Research towards Sustainable Development" in Kiel in July 2017. The selected projects are offered 200 k€ for a period of two years to address prime research topics within "Future Ocean Sustainability". Research covers topics such as micro plastic ingestion by planktivorous fish, the impact of ice sheet melting on the ocean, assessing the contribution of coastal ecosystems to overall wealth and sustainable development or the integration of ocean and climate frameworks into ocean governance. The approaches used span from discovery and understanding to assessment and solutions for sustainable development with the oceans.

Short introductions into the novel research questions highlighted the immense spectrum of postdoctoral research in the Cluster, integrating philosophy, law, economics and classical marine science. Food for thought was then provided by Iris Werner, head of the Central Office for Gender Equality, Diversity & Family at Kiel University introducing the EU project "Baltic Gender - Baltic Consortium on Promoting Gender Equality in Marine Research Organisations" in which Kiel University partners with GEOMAR and other marine research institutions in five countries around the Baltic.

The social part of the get together was a unique opportunity for meeting the new fellow IMAP members, Cluster speaker Martin Visbeck and key staff from the Cluster Office in a relaxed atmosphere.
