Networking implies regular communication for mutual benefit and is, just like the successfull establishment of research collaborations, an essential though often neglected prerequisite for career advancement in an academic setting. Hence, to promote the formation of an active professional and social network among postdoctoral researchers within 'The Future Ocean', regular assemblies of the IMAP network are coordinated.

Initiatives within ‘The Future Ocean’ to structure multidisciplinary and international exchange among the postdoctoral peer group include formal IMAP meetings to facilitate the communication of information and ideas between members. These meetings also help in identifying and addressing issues that are relevant to postdoctoral researchers and research fellows in the Cluster and newly emerging issues with regard to the German academic systeminformal meetings such as ‘Stammtisch’ and IMAP retreat to foster social contacts among the international IMAP community an alumni network to share contacts between former and current members. Knowing and involving our alumni allows us to track the careers of former members within academia or outside and to broaden interactions in the national and international scientific community.
