I am interested in the links between plankton ecology and biogeochemical element fluxes. I address questions like for example: How do expected future changes in plankton communities affect the vertical flux of carbon into the deep ocean? Another research interest is one particular group of phytoplankton – coccolithophores. These are tiny photosynthesizing microbes which cover themselves with an elaborate shell made of calcium carbonate. They are of considerable importance for the global carbon cycle as they form huge blooms which can be seen from space. I recently initiated a project where we ask a long standing question: Why do coccolithophores form this shell?
