My current project aims at establishing the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora as a new animal model for basic visual research, since it is complex enough to provide answers to current and future questions, yet simple enough for resident researchers to understand in detail. Animals relying on vision as their main sensory modality reserve a large part of their central nervous system to appropriately navigate their environment. In general, neural involvement correlates to the complexity of the visual system and behavioural repertoire. Our understanding of neuro-neuronal visual information processing has therefore been hampered by challenges inherent to the model systems currently available - too large and complex to understand in detail.
