DEEP-Alboran: Revealing the seismic and tsunamigenic hazard to coastal cities in the western Mediterranean.
The main objective of this project is to estimate the seismic and tsunamigenic potential of the large active faults of the westernmost Mediterranean. Due to the long recurrence period of the active faults in the area (> 1000 years), they have been often ignored in the seismic hazard assessment. However, it is an active zone and earthquakes occurring there suppose a risk for the high-populated adjacent coastal areas, currently characterized as low risk zones. A suitable characterization of the deep structure is essential in order to update the seismic characterization of the active faults, and to estimate their seismogenic and tsunamigenic potential and the associated hazard for the region. In DEEP-Alboran project, I propose to fulfil the characterization of the Alboran Basin crustal domains through Wide Angle Seismic data and depth-migrated seismic sections, to characterize the entire dimension of the faults delineating their crustal domain boundaries, and to estimate the main active faults seismic and associated tsunamigenic hazard.
