My postdoc research project analyses how international institutions and norms influence the socio-economic and environmental challenges of increasing marine mineral resource extraction. In particular, I study how the international regime of the Arctic Council enables political and socio-economic participation of different affected indigenous groups with regard to the governance of off-shore oil extraction, and to what extend this participation contributes to an environmentally sound governance of marine resources. Lessons learned from the Arctic region will help to further advance the development of more sustainable marine mineral resource governance in other cases worldwide.
