The subpolar North Atlantic is an integral part of our climate system. Here, warm water from the subtropics releases its heat and thereby influences the large-scale atmospheric circulation. The heat loss, in turn, allows the surface water to become dense enough to sink and fill the deep ocean around our planet. In my research, I investigate the complex interactions between the atmosphere and ocean in this region on a wide range of time scales, using both atmosphere and ocean observations as well as models.
