Energy politics are a contested terrain. Since the institutionalisation of the German energy transition (Energiewende) in 2011 fossil fuel such as oil and gas are mostly comprehended as „bridge technologies“. Against this backdrop, the plans to expand the extraction of fossil fuels are striking. With hydraulic fracturing (fracking) such an expansion became a political possibility also in the federal states Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony. In this project, I reconstruct the broad public rejection of this extractive expansion in Northern Germany and particularly in the coastal areas.
