My research focuses on cyanobacteria with a special emphasis on their carbon and hydrogen metabolism. I am especially interested in the physiological function of the bidirectional NiFe-hydrogenase, which is widely distributed among cyanobacteria of marine coastal surface waters, lakes and microbial mats. Most of my work concentrates on the model organism Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 whose genome is completely sequenced and which is amenable to molecular biological tools providing the opportunity to study gene function and systems biology.
