My research centers on the interaction between the environment and physiological systems in marine invertebrate larvae. I am interested in the function and evolution of digestive systems. I am using physiological trait based approaches to understand what molecular and physiological mechanisms are impacted by environmental change and how the environment may be driving the evolution of functional systems like the digestive tract in the future. Working at the department of Zoophysiology at Kiel University, I am especially interested in the role of gastric pH in immune defense and the impact of the environment, including microbes, on gastric pH, larval digestion and energy acquisition.
