Who can become a member?

Membership in the Cluster of Excellence is open to legal persons who have proven their ability for independent scientific work in the area of one of the research fields covered in the Cluster by means of a relevant doctoral dissertation. Members must be employed at one of the partner institutes. You can apply for membership yourself as long as at least one member supports your application. The Cluster distinguishes between full membership and associated membership.

What is the difference between full membership and associated membership?

The cluster differentiates between a full membership (with voting rights at the members’ meeting and the right to run as a candidate for offices in the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”) and an associated membership (without voting rights at the members’ meeting). Both groups are fully entitled to apply for Cluster funding measures.

How can I become a member?

An application for membership should be directed to the Cluster Board. A complete application consists of the following:

The Board will decide on a recommendation to accept the application. If the application has been accepted by the board, the applicant becomes a provisional member. The final decision regarding membership is voted on once a year at the members’ meeting.

What possibilities do members have to apply for funding in the Cluster of Excellence "Future Ocean"?

In addition to the regular announcements of research projects in the Cluster, the Cluster supports its members with funding programs for example to support workshops, invitations to guest scientists and travel expenses for international conferences and trade fairs. Is there a preferred phrase to acknowledge the cluster funding in a publication acknowledgement?

Yes, please use the following phrase.

"This project was funded by the Cluster of Excellence 80 "The Future Ocean". The "Future Ocean" is funded within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) on behalf of the German federal and state governments."
