'Academic career paths in Germany and their legal ramifications' - An event targeting early career scientists from all disciplines in Kiel

01 March 2017
10:00 – 15:30 h

Location
Murmann-Hörsaal, Leibnizstr. 1, 24118 Kiel

In Germany academic career tracks are, for the most part, based on non-permanent employment contracts. This employment situation often lasts for many years and usually involves a number of consecutive contracts. There are several legal provisions regulating this employment situation, leaving the scientists affected unsure of how these regulations may impact their future career paths. Profound knowledge on academic career options and the respective legal framework is necessary to make the right decisions and to plan for the long term.

At the information event on March 1, the specialist lawyers Dr. Ulrike Preißler and Dr. Sven Hendricks, legal advisors at the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers (DHV), will highlight possible career paths for scientists after Ph.D. including the various paths leading to a professorship position in Germany. They will also inform participants about the legal regulations relevant to this career track and general legal aspects of non-permanent positions in science. The presentations will be followed by an opportunity for individual counselling by experts from the human resources departments at Kiel University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

The event is organized by the Cluster of Excellence 'The Future Ocean', the Collaborative Research Center (SFB 754) 'Climate – Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean', the Transatlantic Research School 'Helmholtz Research School for Ocean System Science and Technology (HOSST)', Kiel University, and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
