Practically all activities at sea have a legal dimension since the legality of the utilization, the assignment/allocation of various maritime zones, environmental limitations and aspects of national sovereignty all play a crucial role.
The utilization of marine raw materials such as gas hydrates is for the most part unclear since the zones in which this possible fuel source is found fall under international law. Gas hydrates are, however, a relatively new and for the most part unresearched resource, so that how and whether they can be used at all must first be determined on an international level. The same holds true for possible CO2 sequestration in the ocean.
