  • The ISOS programme is the programme for all doctoral candidates in marine sciences in Kiel. We offer you courses, travel support and support throughout your doctorate - with the focus on the marine community.
  • You will obtain your doctoral degree from your faculty and you will have to comply with their rules.
  • As an international candidate you can get help with e.g. insurances, housing, visa,… from the International Center (for more information see below).
  • To use the offers from the Graduate Center (a structure for the whole doctoral community at Kiel University) you have to register separately through their homepage.


International doctoral candidates

  • If you are new to Germany and new in your doctoral position, you might want to know more about how our academic system works. Getting familiar with the German mentality might make every day life a bit easier. At the ISOS we offer courses tailored to the needs of foreign researchers entering the German system. And of course you can contact us personally any time you require assistance.
  • the International Center at Kiel University helps you in many fields e.g. insurances, housing, visa, etc.
    • they offers the course "Conversational German" for doctoral candidates from abroad togehter with the Graduate Center
    • they organise events and other activities for international students:"Docs Get-Together" is a perfect opportunity for you to meet other doctoral candidates from different countries. The meetings take place twice a month and are organized by the International Center and the Graduate Center.
    • The International Center also plans excursions and activities throughout the semester. By offering one-day trips to interesting cities or theme nights the International Center won’t let you get bored during your stay in Kiel. You get the chance to meet other students and to learn about the German culture at the same time.
