Kiel Marine sciences research alumni network Kimas-ran

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) has awarded Kiel University 30.000 € for a new research alumni strategy. International researchers who have worked in Kiel will act as ambassadors after their return home by advertising for Kiel, thereby fostering international partnerships and attracting excellent researchers. The pilot project is establishing an international research alumni network for Kiel Marine Sciences and Kiel University (KiMaS-RAN) focusing on current international IMAP members and former Cluster members.

Potential future alumni are being prepared for their role as international ambassadors while still in Kiel and established partnerships with the US, China and Canada are being exploited to establish new contacts. A kick off conference presenting examples of successful research alumni work was organized by the AvH November 2013 in Berlin.

International scientists are important ambassadors for promoting a university or research institute where they themselves have done research. Up to now researchers have often played a lesser role in existing alumni networks. These researchers are being targeted for engagement at Kiel University in order to strengthen international partnerships and to get excellent early career scientists interested in Kiel.

The competition “Researcher Alumni Strategies” is the follow-up program to the ideas competition “Researcher Alumni of German Universities” and addresses systematic research alumni work more directly. It is part of the “International Marketing” project, carried out jointly by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German Research Foundation and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. The project is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It is part of the “Research in Germany” initiative.
