The ISOS multimedia and e-learning team produces and coordinates small multimedia and e-learning projects at different levels to integrate modern technologies into science communication and traditional face-to-face learning scenarios.
All content-related projects are carried out by small teams, the average production period currently amounts to approximately 4 weeks.
Framework projects involve platform development and implementation of production frameworks. They incorporate software developers and are scheduled on a longer timescale.
I. Content-related Projects
May – September 2011 | Arend, Eizaguirre
Loggerhead turtles on the cape verdes
A Website has been designed and implemented for Dr. Chris Eizaguirre of GEOMAR. The site contains information on an ongoing project about Loggerhead turtles of the Cape Verde Islands. Information, animations and interactive material have been put together, informing about the project activities. It is hoped that with open information more awareness can lead to increased support for the activities at the Cape Verde Islands.

June – October 2011 | Antia, Milde
Kieler Woche - Science Slam
The first Science Slam in the history of the Kiel Week was recorded by video. The videos were put on a website which is available here:

April - June 2010 | Willié
GIS for Ocean Sciences
For this ISOS PhD Course on Geographic Information Systems, tutorials will be created via screen recording and will be available with additional material in Nickels as a blendend learning scenario (self-study, seminar, practical).
April 2010 - March 2011 | Schneider, Maack
CliMoClips
Focus of the e-learning project "CliMoClips - Soundslides und e-learning zur Klimamodellierung" which is funded by ISOS in cooperation with eLK.Medien, is the creation of soundslides (images/videos plus audio) embedded in an e-learning module on climate modelling.
Winter 2009/2010 | Schneider et al., Bamler
Introduction to Marine Geology
The lecture "Introduction to Marine Geology" was recorded as e-lecture - a combination of slides, video and audio. These recordings were provided as .swf-films weekly in the portal "Geowissenschaften (BSc)" with link to the portal "Biological Oceanography (MSc)". The e-lectures proved to be a valuable source for the learning process - see the evaluation report.
Summer 2010 | Woop
ISOS Wiki FotoGallery
The photographs of the marine organisms from the Baltic Sea are soon displayed as foto catalogues in the ISOS Wiki - have a look at some echinoderms ...
January - July 2009 | Gonschior, Schönmuth, Steffen, Melzner, Wahl
Photographs of marine organisms for classification
More than 170 species of marine organisms from the Baltic Sea were photographed for an online classification course. The material - shells and living specimens - was provided from both collections and sampling during "Alkor" cruises.
Summer 2009 | Melzner, Hammann
Videos on the functional and physiological morphology of marine organisms
About 20 videos (1-2 min duration) were recorded with a video camera mounted on a binocular microscope.
Oktober 2008 - April 2009 | Froese, Garilao, Lorenz, Göbbels
Biodiversity of Fish and Fish Online
The content of the already exisiting and freely accessable online courses "Biodiversity of Fish" and "Fish Online" was transferred to Nickels and enriched with lecture video podcasts, additional media and interactive components, including a direct interaction with the online resource Fishbase.
April 2008 | Beyer, Eisenhauer, Friedrichs
Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy
For this ISOS PhD Course on 'Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy', firstly introduced in April 2008, materials and assignments were created and arranged in Nickels for a blendend learning scenario (self-study, seminar, practical).
March - April 2008 | Slawig, Gördes
Practical Course in Computer Programming
This course was based on a framework for participative and collaborative components (i.e. basic Wiki functionality), newly introduced in Nickels. Students are enabled to write e-content groupwise and to upload and share Java-Applets as exercises results.
March 2008 | Antia, Göbbels, Lorenz
PhD Short Films
ISOS PhDs got the opportunity to present themselfs and their work by short films; this project shall generate a general video production service.
Winter 2007/2008 | Lenz, Appelhans
Applied Biostatistics
For each of the 12 parts of this course (lecture and exercise), extensive interactive assignments have been developed for students to test their acquired knowledge. Exercises are based on multiple choice, order and assignment tasks and include automatic feedback functions.
Winter 2007/2008 | Antia, Hammann
Biogeochemistry
The script for the practical course "Biogeochemistry" (being part of the module "MNF-bioc-102 -- Practical Courses in Biological Oceanography") has been enriched with different interactive components, like assignments, maps, visual guidelines for experimental setups as well as interactive software and a master spreadsheet. Additionally, the Nickels glossary got about 70 new entries.
II. Framework Projects
Winter 2009/2010
Nickels Quick Reference Guides
.. are a set of short printable instruction sheets intended as Quickstart to Nickels for tutors/authors and managers. At the moment available in german; english versions coming soon.
since August 2007
Nickels Development
Like any software, the acceptance of e-learning platforms heavily depends on user-friendliness. Hence, any platform can be facilitate and updated in this respect. In close cooperation with our customers, the ISOS e-learning group identifies features to be modified in or newly introduced to Nickels. These features are implemented by the Nickels developers as fast as possible.
