Experiencing Biodiversity & Evolutionary research in Japan

Exchange with Kyoto University Global Center of Excellence (COE) Programme - a great opportunity for PhD students

In September 2010, six early stage researchers from Kiel University had the opportunity to go to Japan for a quite unique research visit. On Yakushima, an UNESCO World Natural Heritage with endemic species they studied the diversity, ecology and behaviour of unique wild animals, plants and fungi by doing traditional fieldwork. In a DNA Training Course at Kyoto University they than analysed the samples taken on Yakushima. Besides, they learned lots about Japanese tradition and science culture.
